A Different Kind of Writers group is now Sunset Coast Writers!
Why the name change? Two reasons.
First: I started A Different Kind of Writers Group six years ago, when my husband and I still lived in Des Moines, Iowa. Now that we live in SW Michigan, I wanted a name that would acknowledge our new location on Lake Michigan’s beautiful sunset coast and convey the changes that have occurred since my first DKWG workshop: certification by Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA); an MFA in Creative Writing; and a dedicated writing space at the Box Factory for the Arts.
Second: Sunset Coast Writers is more than just the writing groups. I offer editing and individual coaching, and am available to lead workshops tailored to meet the needs of your company or organization. I currently facilitate a monthly group for military veterans, and will soon offer my second workshop for Lory’s Place. Somehow, A Different Kind of Writers Group didn’t seem to cover all that.
We may have a new name, a new website, and new business cards, but underneath it all, Sunset Coast Writers is still a different kind of writers group. We still write together and we still follow the AWA method. I still believe that “a writer is someone who writes,” and I still serve cookies (usually freshly-made) at every session. In one of my early workshops, a participant who was also a long-time friend said, “You know I only come for the cookies.” I said, “I don’t care why you come, as long as you stay for the writing.” I still feel that way.
I as so grateful to have found my way to DKWG, and love the new name!
Way to go, Barbara. I love the new name, and it’s great to hear what you’re doing. Take care,
Alison
